In 2012 Steve had the privilege to be a photographic mentor and trainer at the newspaper, Jornal Independente, in Timor-Leste (East Timor)

As part of Fairfax Media's giving program, More Than Words, it was extremely fulfilling to work alongside an amazingly dedicated team of young journalists in Dili, Timor-Leste. Although working under difficult conditions and without an interpreter it was a pleasure to see progress in the photographic skills of the team at Jornal Independente in the space of a month. Their friendliness and desire to learn made for a great exchange of ideas. It was also very rewarding to learn about the Timorese culture and about their struggles in the past.
